You will need to set up a bank account for safe keeping your school loan and college money.

Never leave large amounts of money around your dorm room or apartment. You are opening yourself up to theft. Keep your money safe in the bank.

Some students maintain a joint account with their parents. That's okay. But we recommend that you open your own bank account to begin learning important financial management skills and to build your personal financial management history.

Check with your family bank or banks in your school town for the following services:

  • FREE Student Checking Accounts
  • FREE ATM access with ATM facilities near your school or home
  • On-Line banking capabilities to manage your accounts
  • Other student related services such as a secured credit card or other

Taking Care of Driving and Other Privileges

Almost all states allow for out-of-state students to maintain and use their residence driver's license to operate a vehicle while attending school.

However, if you plan to obtain residency within the state that your school is located, or if you continue to reside in the state during summer months, some states may require an in-state driver's license and auto registration.

In addition, some states may require a separate permit to operated a motorized scooter or motorcycle while attending school.

Check the state's motor vehicle and driving registration requirements for students:

One of your greatest rights when you reach age 18 is the privilege of voting. Don't forget to register.

Many voter registrations can be completed at State DMVs. Check your State's DMV site for information:

Getting Medical and Other Insurance

Your parent's medical and dental plans usually cover college-age children who are full-time students..

But not always. And some insurance will only cover students up to a certain age limit. Check with your parents' insurance company.

If you find yourself not adequately covered, many schools offer student medical and dental insurance at affordable prices. Arrange for adequate coverage.
